The hatch table
A hatch chart tells you what is on the water, at what time of year, and what to do about it. This is the same thing for the fees: what runs, how often it runs, and what it costs.
Two prices exist and both are printed here rather than quoted on request. A beat book states the fee alongside the season because both are facts of the water, not an opening position in a negotiation. Everything else on this page explains what sits behind the two figures.

fixed fee Both figures are ND Media LTD prices, agreed in writing before work starts. Neither is an estimate and neither moves once agreed.
Where the fee goes, month by month
The retainer is one fee. The work inside it changes shape as the engagement matures. A hatch chart is read month by month and this is set out the same way.
| Phase | What is on the water | Where the fee goes |
|---|---|---|
| Month one Early season | The dated baseline and the technical pass. Obstacles found and the worst of them removed. | Mostly technical |
| Months two and three Mid season | The missing pages get written and the internal linking is rebuilt around them. Business details corrected everywhere they appear. | Mostly content |
| Months four to six Prime time | Content compounds and citation work starts to show. The month one record is re-run against the same questions. | Content and citation |
| Month seven onward Late season | Maintenance, decay checks on older pages, and expansion into whatever the record says is now worth chasing. | Maintenance and expansion |
how it works This is the shape the work usually takes, for the reasons given in the copy above. It is not a promise about when results appear.
What moves the fee above £600
| Your situation | Why it moves the fee | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| A single location, one service line | The simplest case. One set of pages, one map listing, one set of questions to track. | At £600 |
| Several service lines | Each line needs its own pages, its own questions tracked, and its own citation checks. | Above £600 |
| Several locations or a national market | Local work multiplies per location, and a national market means competing against far more capable sites. | Above £600 |
| A large or neglected site | Hundreds of pages, or years of accumulated technical debt, means the first months are heavier than usual. | Above £600 |
fixed fee £600 is the floor, not an average. The figure for your business is quoted before anything starts and does not move afterwards.
Every one of these moves the fee upward. That is why it is written as from £600 rather than as a headline price with the conditions in a footnote.
The honest answer gets given when your situation does not justify the fee.
What is never a separate invoice
Reporting, the monthly re-run of the record, and any conversation about the work are inside the fee. So is fixing something that was found to be broken during the technical pass.
Advertising spend, third-party licences, photography and full website rebuilds are outside it. Any of those that would help gets said plainly and you buy it directly rather than through me with a margin added.
Asked most often about price
Why is the retainer quoted as from £600 rather than a flat figure?
The work genuinely scales with the size of the site and the number of sectors and locations involved. A single-location trade and a distribution business with four product lines and a national market are not the same job. Pricing them identically would mean one of them subsidising the other.
Is there a minimum term on the retainer?
No. It runs month to month and stops when you say so, with no exit fee and no notice period buried in a contract.
Why is there no cheap starter package?
A fee low enough to look attractive buys too few hours to change anything. The client ends up paying twelve months for a result that was never possible at that price. The £400 Sprint exists as the low-commitment entry point instead, a genuine piece of work rather than a sales call.
What is not included in the fee?
Paid advertising spend, third-party software licences bought in your name, professional photography, and website rebuilds beyond the fixes described. Any of these that would help gets said plainly and you buy it directly rather than through me with a margin on top.
Do you take a commission or a percentage of results?
No. The fee is a fixed monthly figure agreed in advance, keeping the advice honest. Payment models tied to a metric create a quiet pressure to optimise the metric rather than the business.
